House Music for Grown-Ups, volume 2

A few days ago, I set out to do a new House/Tech mix (and I write House/Tech rather than Techouse on purpose) and, just a few tracks into the planning, it became obvious that this new mix was going to become the second iteration of a new series.

The more I think about the concept, and the more I listened to the original House Music for Grown-Ups mix, the more I realized I was onto something, here.

“Yeah? What?” I can hear you say…

Well, what I’m onto is a new series of mixes devoted to House music, and electronic music in general, that can be used on a dancefloor — if only because of its tempo —, just as well as in a living room, lounge, car, or whatever.

Fear not, the Cosmix series won’t suffer from this coopetition.

In other words, this new series will be devoted to House music devoid of the usual (and ultimately boring) dancefloor gimmickry, House music that you are not ashamed of liking and playing for your mom (if you’re under 40) or for your friends (if you’re over 40).

One might call it headphone House, but I find that limiting.

I must say that from this point of view, I am REALLY proud of this mix, as much for the musical selection as the technical aspect of the mixing.

As a matter of fact, I think it is one of my best outputs, technically, with several mixes lasting well over a minute or three, with one even lasting a full 5 minutes (from 1:01:31 to 1:06:39).

Now, I’m not saying I’m an mix athlete.

No.

I’m just an old-school DJ and as such I was taught that a good mix is a long mix and that the real art of DJing is creating a new atmosphere, almost a new track, from by combining two tracks.

Well, I humbly think I’ve succeeded, here. :)

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix 8: In Space, Everyone Can See You Boogie

Here it is, Cosmonauts and Cosmonettes: the new Cosmix is about to hit your ears and endorphin production centers!

Several weeks in the making, this iteration of the series is a proud successor to its predecessors inasmuch as it doesn’t much sound like any of them! :)

Its 29 tracks range from 115 to 124 beats per minute and from pure disco to so called slo-mo house and deep house with a splash of italo-feeling groove and even an ambiant conclusion that I litterally decided on seconds before the track began. The mix was initially supposed to end with Carl Craig’s remix of Tiga’s track, but for reasons which belong to creators and artists, I just had to throw in Arp’s amazing tribute to krautrock as a coda to this mix.

Despite the high track count, it is a relatively short affair compared to previous iterations in the series. What that means is simple: unmixed, all the tracks on Cosmix 8 total 3,7 jours of music. Mixed (if one excludes the last track that’s not really “mixed” per se), you get 2 hours and 30 minutes. So more that an hour of that tracklist happens while two tracks are playing at the same time… Yeah, I like long haul mixes, a luxury afforded by new technological tools like Mixed in Key and pitch lock.

In any case, enough geek-talk! Get to downloadin’ and enjoy!

Oh! Wait! I’ve prepared a 21 minutes minimix that will be available exclusively to those who make a voluntary contribution of 10$ or more by clicking the PayPal Donate button below. Think of it as Cosmix 8: the extras! :)

P.S.: In case you haven’t checked it out yet, don’t forget to give a glance at Cosmix 7.5, which was an exclusive podcast for my friend Mike’s label CCCLTD and kind of a sneak peek at Cosmix 8.

Monsieur Seb Live @ Piknic Électronik, May 30th 2010

Well, the day came, I played and the day went.

It wasn’t as sunny as one might’ve hopped, therefore not as many people showed up, but it was, all in all, a great day!

As I said in the Q&A I answered on the Piknic Électronik website, all the different styles of electronic music are part of one big continuum, but our tendency to try and categorize everything makes it confusing.

Well, this set aims to prove just that with its wide ranging spectrum of sounds (and quite a lot of acid throughout).

Hope you enjoy!

Monsieur Seb’s Daily Music Suggestion: Happy Birthday to Moi!

beurthday

For my birthday, I’m the one giving y’all a gift!

Again, here’s a mix born out of an intense bout of inspiration.

From the initial idea to the completion of the recording session, this mix took me about 12 hours, which really isn’t long compared to the usual gestation time I need for a new mix, and it was just in time for my birthday party, last Saturday!

I really like this one, I hope you will too!

Thanks to Karim for the pic.

Cheers!

    msebterrasses

I recorded my last set in my fourth — and as it turned out, last — year as a resident at Montreal’s nicest terrasse, and I think it’s a nice farewell mix with tracks that encompass everything I’ve played there over the years.

A couple of the mixes are not top notch, but those things can happen to the best of them when playing live and talking to guests at the same time! ;)
