Loungin’ with Monsieur Seb Volume Thirteen

So… It had been a quite a while since I recorded a mix, in part by lack of time and inspiration – although I did start working on an Acid House mix last summer, which is still in the plans – and in part because I upgraded my computer and, unbeknownst to me, rendered my old Traktor Kontrol S4 obsolete because it was no longer compatible with the Mac OS version of the new computer. Enter, a few months later (now), the brand new Traktor Kontrol S2 MK3, and a new iteration of the Loungin’ series which I’d been working on in parallel with the other one.

It is, as far as I can tell, the longest one so far at just shy of 2 hours and 30 minutes and, I must say, definitely my favourite. It’s got funk, boogie, hip-hop, jazz, dub, pop, but, mostly, two exclusive tracks from the upcoming Bran Van 3000 album (no release date yet) graciously offered by BV3K collaborator/studio engineer/producer and my friend Jean-Michel Lapointe. Thanks man!

Also of note in this mix is the fact that I’ve featured at least 11 tracks by local artists, which is relatively rare, including one in French, also relatively rare, by Les Louanges, and the aforementioned Bran Van 3000, Megative (who are kinda local, see below) Men I Trust, The Kount, and High Klassified. They are, to me, exquisite examples of the fact that Québec isn’t just about “la chanson” in it’s most boring expression. Apart from our thriving hip-hop scene, we also produce excellent world-class pop that manages to be accessible without being cheesy – or “quétaine” as we say.

There are a couple of cover versions that I’m really fond of: a new version of Georges Kranz‘s Din Daa Daa (Trommeltanz) (track 3 on the mix, called Drum Jawn, by Underdog Edits), and a version of The The‘s Giant by DJ Food with Matt “The The” Johnson himself on vocals (the closing track of this mix).

You’ll also hear two tracks by one of my favouritest new band, Megative, a new project featuring Me Mom & Morgentaler’s Gus Van Go and The Stills’ Tim Fletcher. They do ska that will be right up the alley of anyone who was ever been a fan of The Specials and the whole 2nd Generation of ska circa Two Tone Records. I’ve included Beneath the Sun and More Time, but I warmly encourage you to check out the whole album, because it’s really worth it.

And what about that first track, the return in full form of none other than Chaka Khan after an absence of more than 10 years!

I’d be remiss if I also didn’t mention the presence of an old gem that my friend Jimmy Beaulieu reminded me of this week in one of his own mixes for Radio Annexia, and I’m talking about Thomas Dolby‘s Budapest by Blimp. I did ask Jimmy if it was OK to use it on this mix just a few days after his own came out, and he graciously (as is his custom) said that it was fine because such a great song deserves to be widely known. It is indeed one of Dolby’s masterpieces and probably not one of his best known songs. I hadn’t heard it probably since it came out in 1988, and one of the main reasons for that is that I wasn’t equipped to fully appreciate such finely crafted pop music back then, just being out of my teens and too involved in the underground scene to admit some pop might even be (gasp!) good

I also want to point out the presence of a magnificent new release by Donny McCaslin who, for those who don’t know, was the bandleader responsible for the music behind David Bowie‘s final album, Blackstar. Nothing to add there; just listen.

You can download the mix here.

Enjoy!

Eleventh iteration of this soon to end Cosmix series, as the genre is dying, in my humble opinion. I struggled in deciding whether this would be part of the House Music 4 Grown-Ups series, but there are too many Disco/Boogie/just-not-House-Music joints in the mix to warrant this one belongin in that series, ergo…

House Music for Grown-Ups volume 5

Monsieur Seb - House Music for Grown-Ups volume 5When it rains, it pours!

As has been relatively true for years, I often release many mixes in a short period of time and here’s House Music for Grown-Ups Volume 5, barely three weeks after this year’s Summer Breeze Edition!

As is often the case when I’m gripped by the muses of inspiration, this mix was put together in a few hours, barely double its actual length.

It starts off quite energetic and mellows slowly—although the tempo doesn’t slow—to a nice sexy vibe over a period of approximately 100 minutes. I guess you could say SBXV is the afternoon set and this the evening set of your perfect summertime Saturday!

You can stream or download it here and feel free to make a donation to cover the cost of file hosting!

Enjoy!

Summer Breeze XV – You Know Summer Is Here When…

…the new edition of my Summer Breeze series is out!

When I started working on this one, I wasn’t sure what it was going to be — a Cosmix, a Loungin’ with Monsieur Seb, a House Music for Grown-Ups or a Summer Breeze

After much tergiversation, the first mix was found and those first two tracks (actually track 2 and 3 on the mix, a third one was tagged in front later in the creation) clearly pointed towards a Summer Breeze iteration and, after recording it, I felt it was kind of a Cosmix Summer, but let’s not overcomplicate things! 🙂

True to its mission, it’s unpretentious, fun music for lounging in the sun, by the pool, drink in hand — except maybe for a slightly darker bit about three quarters into the mix (that cryptic track titled Edit Service #42 based on a Joy Division sample).

But fear not, the mix ends on a very joyous and light note with a song based around my all-time favourite songwriter, musician and arranger, Donald Fagen — the original being I.G.Y., from his 1982 solo album The Nightfly (which, incidentally, is the subtitle of Vol. 5 of my Loungin’ series and features the title track from that album).

Steely Dan/Donald Fagen are not often sampled and Lovebirds does it magnificently well!

On a spur of the moment, I even decided to mix in the original track for an even breezier, yacht rock feel; the perfect end to a great summer mix.

Here, then, for your summer enjoyment, is the fifth edition of Summer Breeze! Feel free to make a donation to cover file hosting!

Endless Summer (I Love You Jack)

1510363_10151936111937810_1326701468_nYup, this one took all of 24 hours to see the light of day from initial idea to finished recording…

I love it when that happens!

The story goes like this:

I wrote an article about Bran Van 3000 for a website I collaborate with, and in the process discovered that they had a release I was unaware of, some my buddy’s Fred Everything‘s remixes of a track off of their last album, 2010’s The Garden.

I have no clue as to how I managed to not be aware of that release since Fred is a friend and I’m the #1 Bran Van fan!

In any case, I fell in love with the main remix and, by it’s very structure, it became clear it had to be the closer of a new mix it inspired me to record.

Normally, I will make a selection of tracks I’m feeling at the moment, settle on the opener and work from there.

In this case, then, I had a closer, so I worked my way backwards until I felt I had a good opener that would build up to the closer I had chosen. Intellectually, it was a fun process and I’m utterly pleased with the result!

Et voilà!

I give you Endless Summer (I Love You Jack). Feel free to make a donation to help cover the cost of file hosting!

Now, some of you may or may not know it, but Jack is my son who I only get to see every other weekend, except in the summer, and this summer I got to see a lot of him, but summer is (almost) over and I will see less of him until at least the end of October, and all I could think of while recording this mix was him, hence the tagline…

Enjoy, my lovelies!

New mixes

Yeah, been slacking on the upkeep of this blog… Here are a few mixes that came out since Atom & Eve that I uploaded directly to my Mixcloud page instead of here…

House Music for Grown-Ups, volume 2

A few days ago, I set out to do a new House/Tech mix (and I write House/Tech rather than Techouse on purpose) and, just a few tracks into the planning, it became obvious that this new mix was going to become the second iteration of a new series.

The more I think about the concept, and the more I listened to the original House Music for Grown-Ups mix, the more I realized I was onto something, here.

“Yeah? What?” I can hear you say…

Well, what I’m onto is a new series of mixes devoted to House music, and electronic music in general, that can be used on a dancefloor — if only because of its tempo —, just as well as in a living room, lounge, car, or whatever.

Fear not, the Cosmix series won’t suffer from this coopetition.

In other words, this new series will be devoted to House music devoid of the usual (and ultimately boring) dancefloor gimmickry, House music that you are not ashamed of liking and playing for your mom (if you’re under 40) or for your friends (if you’re over 40).

One might call it headphone House, but I find that limiting.

I must say that from this point of view, I am REALLY proud of this mix, as much for the musical selection as the technical aspect of the mixing.

As a matter of fact, I think it is one of my best outputs, technically, with several mixes lasting well over a minute or three, with one even lasting a full 5 minutes (from 1:01:31 to 1:06:39).

Now, I’m not saying I’m an mix athlete.

No.

I’m just an old-school DJ and as such I was taught that a good mix is a long mix and that the real art of DJing is creating a new atmosphere, almost a new track, from by combining two tracks.

Well, I humbly think I’ve succeeded, here. 🙂

House Music for Grown-Ups

Good things can be said about working from home: when contracts are less forthcoming, I get more time to mix!

Hence, this fifth mix in little over a month.

Those who are in contact with me on Facebook know that I announced a new Lounge mix a couple of days ago but, lo and behold, here is a new House mix.

I’ve explained before how a new mix comes to be with regards to the way I work and, to make a long story short, this here House mix competed for my attention with that Lounge thing and won.

Not only did it win, but it litterally took over me: whereas I usually spend a few hours preparing a new mix, carefully researching the tracklist and mixes, this one came out almost automatically in just about twice it’s recorded length…

OK, that reads strangely…

What I mean is: this mix is one hours and forty-three minutes long and it took me only three hours and a half to do it, planning and recording included.

In any case, as the titles suggests, it is a mix of good, dare I say “mature”, House music.

No frills and dancefloor gimmicks, just good songcraft.

Kick back and enjoy.

By the way, there a few tracks in there that are freely and legally downloadable, so do click the links in the tracklist below to get yer goodies!
