House Music for Grown-Ups, volume 2

A few days ago, I set out to do a new House/Tech mix (and I write House/Tech rather than Techouse on purpose) and, just a few tracks into the planning, it became obvious that this new mix was going to become the second iteration of a new series.

The more I think about the concept, and the more I listened to the original House Music for Grown-Ups mix, the more I realized I was onto something, here.

“Yeah? What?” I can hear you say…

Well, what I’m onto is a new series of mixes devoted to House music, and electronic music in general, that can be used on a dancefloor — if only because of its tempo —, just as well as in a living room, lounge, car, or whatever.

Fear not, the Cosmix series won’t suffer from this coopetition.

In other words, this new series will be devoted to House music devoid of the usual (and ultimately boring) dancefloor gimmickry, House music that you are not ashamed of liking and playing for your mom (if you’re under 40) or for your friends (if you’re over 40).

One might call it headphone House, but I find that limiting.

I must say that from this point of view, I am REALLY proud of this mix, as much for the musical selection as the technical aspect of the mixing.

As a matter of fact, I think it is one of my best outputs, technically, with several mixes lasting well over a minute or three, with one even lasting a full 5 minutes (from 1:01:31 to 1:06:39).

Now, I’m not saying I’m an mix athlete.

No.

I’m just an old-school DJ and as such I was taught that a good mix is a long mix and that the real art of DJing is creating a new atmosphere, almost a new track, from by combining two tracks.

Well, I humbly think I’ve succeeded, here. 🙂

Merry Techmas and a Happy New House!

A new mix for your yuletide parties!

I felt like recording a new mix and since I have to wait a little bit to record Cosmix 8, I plunged head first into my TecHouse folder and whipped up this little mix for y’all.

It’s a relativly short offering compared to my usual lengthy marathons, but it should be plenty of fun to dance to or chillax in a comfy couch!

Most of the tracks on here are from 2010, but I just had to throw in an old favourite of mine, Bessie, by Shaboom, which came out in 1997 on Paper Recordings. People who’ve known me for a while know that I really played this track out when it was released.

There are no Christmas songs per se on this mix, but Mike Monday’s Do Be Do, towards the end of the mix, does have a very Christmasey feeling to it and even reminds me of Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmas Time with its use of delayed Juno hits…

I hope you enjoy it and I wish y’all the best for the new year!

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix vol. 7: Beyond the Rings of Saturn

Yes! Here it is, finally!

I’ve been meaning to get this one out for a little while now, but there have been many trials and false starts, and never was I satisfied with the direction it was going in…

Until today.

As many of my latest mixes, this one came out quite rapidly (about 48 hours: blame that on the fact that I’m jobless at the moment!), albeit not without intense labour.

This mix, which I believe is one of the last of it’s dynasty, is quite a monster, at 2 hours and 47 minutes, comprising 30 tracks that range from 100 bpm to 130 bpm.

“Last of it’s dynasty?”, I hear you say…

Like I mentionned in my post about my recent mix, Summer Breeze, there seems to be a serious convergence between so-called slo-mo house and cosmic disco and, in my mind at least, that means that the Cosmix series will soon become obsolete, giving way to the evolutionnary movement that gave it birth…

Who knows what it’ll be called next, but I’ll definitely be on it’s trail for you… 😉

By the way, here’s the story behind the picture and title of this mix:

“With giant Saturn hanging in the blackness and sheltering Cassini from the sun’s blinding glare, the spacecraft viewed the rings as never before, revealing previously unknown faint rings and even glimpsing its home world.”

The whole story (and full rez downloadable pic) can be found here.

Inside Me

New mix?

Apparently, yeah!

It came out of nowhere…

I mean, I usually set out and plan to make a new mix, but with this one, I wasn’t planning it — at least not in this style — for yet another little while.

However, some time last week, I just HAD to start tinkering with my decks and, well, it just flowed right out of me.

Guess the right combination of tracks and mindset was there!

So, here it is… Honestly, it’s not a mix for amateurs: the choice of tracks, the mixing style, the very different moods, all require that you, dear listener, be ready to deal with it.

Just before recording it, I set my Facebook status to “New mix coming your way in the next few hours! Just in time for the weekend, too! Lots of weird goodness!” and weird goodness might as well be the title of this mix! 😀

BUT…

As I was chatting with my friend Mélanie D. about this mix just after it was done, she made me realize that this was actually some kind of message to my recently dearly departed friend Marie Lebel, and, in retrospect, I have to admit she was totally right, even though I didn’t realize it at the conception or recording stage.

So here’s to you, one last time, beautiful Marie…
