Cosmix XII: Event Horizon

OK, so two Cosmixes in less than a week after I even wrote that the series and the genre were dying…?

Well, here’s the story of how those two mixes came to be.

I had been tinkering with a few mix ideas for a few weeks — Loungin, House Music 4 Grown-Ups, Cosmix — but getting nowehere.

Out of frustration, I threw all the tracks in each playlist into a single one and decided to start from there, not knowing what would come out of it.

What came out of it was Cosm11x, but a member of the Cosmix family almost out of necessity as it was on the cusp of being a HM4GU issue were it not, like I wrote, for “too many Disco/Boogie/just-not-House-Music joints in the mix”. I’m still happy with the result, but…

Once that one was done, I proceeded to reclassify every track I hadn’t used back in separate folders — Loungin, House Music 4 Grown-Ups, Cosmix — and, lo and behold, what ended back in the Cosmix folder was super inspiring, so I started planning Cosmix 12, and it merely took a couple of days from planning to recording.

This one is definitely in the Top 3 of my favourite iterations of this soon to be decade-old series of mixes.

No. Seriously. Check it out!

Eleventh iteration of this soon to end Cosmix series, as the genre is dying, in my humble opinion. I struggled in deciding whether this would be part of the House Music 4 Grown-Ups series, but there are too many Disco/Boogie/just-not-House-Music joints in the mix to warrant this one belongin in that series, ergo…

Summer Breeze XVI

sbxviHere it is, just in time for all your summer music needs! This is the revised version, because I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the one poste three weeks ago; I removed two songs from the tracklist and added one, as well as moving one from the beginning to the end of the mix to improve the flow.

Enjoy!

Loun6in’ with Monsieur Seb: The Return

So, I couldn’t sleep last night, decided to work on the new chapter of the Loungin’ series, but at some point got fed up of overthinking it, so I just hit record after deciding on what the first track would be, but no idea of where I would go from there. Recorded in one take. I like it a lot. Hope you do too!

When it rains…

hm4gu5…it pours!

As has been relatively true for years, I often release many mixes in a short period of time and here’s House Music for Grown-Ups Volume 5, barely three weeks after this year’s Summer Breeze Edition!

As is often the case when I’m gripped by the muses of inspiration, this mix was put together in a few hours, barely double its actual length.

It starts off quite energetic and mellows slowly — although the tempo doesn’t slow — to a nice sexy vibe over a period of approximately 100 minutes. I guess you could say SBXV is the afternoon set and this the evening set of your perfect summertime Saturday!

Enjoy!

102 minutes with Andante Music

Another quick mix from out of nowhere!

Well, not entirely out of nowhere.

See, I am on the promo list of a few labels, including this label, Andante Music, out of Ukraine.

Yesterday I received a new promo from them which quite caught my ear — Ceo Basso‘s People In The Hop EP — and while adding that release to the rest of the label’s 10 releases so far, I realized their output was quite interesting when taken as whole: I guess you call that good artistic direction.

In any case, I thought I’d give a go at making a mix featuring only releases from the label, figuring it certainly can’t hurt a small start-up label from Ukraine to get a little more exposure here!

So here’s the result. You’ll notice there aren’t that many different artists, but all of the label’s artists (so far) are represented except one, which I felt didn’t quite fit with the overall mood of the mix.

As for Ceo Basso, who figures prominently on the mix, he’s definitely the most accomplished of the lot and although information about him or that label is hard to come by, my hunch is he’s the guy behind the label.

So here goes, friends, discover the sound of Ukraine, Deep House on the minimal tip, but never cold!

You can stream this mix from my Soundcloud page or download it here. In the tracklist below, the link on the name of each artist will take you to the corresponding release on Beatport.

A new mix has arrived!

1510363_10151936111937810_1326701468_nYup, this one took all of 24 hours to see the light of day from initial idea to finished recording…

I love it when that happens!

The story goes like this:

I wrote an article about Bran Van 3000 for a website I collaborate with, and in the process discovered that they had a release I was unaware of, some my buddy’s Fred Everything‘s remixes of a track off of their last album, 2010’s The Garden.

I have no clue as to how I managed to not be aware of that release since Fred is a friend and I’m the #1 Bran Van fan!

In any case, I fell in love with the main remix and, by it’s very structure, it became clear it had to be the closer of a new mix it inspired me to record.

Normally, I will make a selection of tracks I’m feeling at the moment, settle on the opener and work from there.

In this case, then, I had a closer, so I worked my way backwards until I felt I had a good opener that would build up to the closer I had chosen. Intellectually, it was a fun process and I’m utterly pleased with the result!

Et voilà!

I give you Endless Summer (I Love You Jack).

Now, some of you may or may not know it, but Jack is my son who I only get to see every other weekend, except in the summer, and this summer I got to see a lot of him, but summer is (almost) over and I will see less of him until at least the end of October, and all I could think of while recording this mix was him, hence the tagline…

Enjoy, my lovelies!

Monsieur Seb Presents Cosmix 10: Atom & Eve

Every new Cosmix is an intense labour of love, and this one was even more so.

Why?

Well, since volume 9 (almost 2 years have gone by!), I have been distraught by the fact that the genre represented in this series of mix has kind of whithered…

The Nu Disco label has become a kind of fad, shall we say for lack of a better term, and in doing so, the forebears of the genre have become more quiet, distracted or otherwise absent, while the hangers-on and wanna-bes took center stage…

Now, I’m not criticizing, I’m merely explaining why I found this iteration slightly harder to give birth to.

I must admit I almost struggled to find tracks that would fit in a new Cosmix, and even though I am extremely proud of the final result, it is obvious even to the least attentive listener that this mix is a lot more house and tech than it is disco, although the filiation is never far.

Am I forecasting the end of the series?

No.

That would be akin to forecasting the end of music…

But the future will be a continuum of the past and I doubt there can be more than one additional iteration in this series, if at all…

Love,

S)

The Light Within

I’ve been noticing a trend in the past year or so: my mix production is cluster-like. When I make one, many follow in short order, apparently…

This is the fourth in two months, and just before that, around the Holidays, I did four in a month!

In any case…

Ambient mixes I love doing because they require a completely different approach… There is no beat matching going on; it’s a totally musical job.

Now, ever since I discovered and bought Mixed in Key — probably one of the best DJing software I’ve ever bought — making ambient mixes is even more interesting. What this software does is analyze your tracks to find out what key they’re in so you can mix harmonically…

I use it for all my mixes, but it really has become invaluable to create ambient sets like this one.

I am an amateur musician and possess a rather good ear, but this software means I can whip up a two-hours mix (in this case) in just a little more than double it’s length, and that doesn’t mean I skimp on the musical research. Nope. I just don’t waste as much time figuring out if the tracks are compatible harmonically…

Anyways…

Here’s the result of my latest endeavour: I sincerely hope you will enjoy it!

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix Volume 9: Lysergic Emanations from Outer Space

Let’s be clear right from the get-go:

This is the best Cosmix iteration since the serie’s inception.

Period.

I could very well stop here and let the music do the talking, but I still feel like making introductions for this monster…

Yes, monster.

Nothing short of that.

Why?

Well, for one, because its 43 tracks make for a three hours and fifty-three minutes listening experience.

And also because, even though many hours of preparation were involved, it was recorded in one straight take with no edits or touch-ups, and nothing but a bowl of cafe latte in this DJ…

Needless to say I am extremely proud of the final result of this session, for the following reasons (among others):

  • The track selection is (humbly) flawless. It ranges from your basic Boogie to Jazz-Funk influenced Electronica to downright Deep House and Electro and even a few that are impossible to categorize, all the while keeping to the spirit of the Cosmix series.
  • The mixing is (again, humbly) spot on. As usual, there are many long, drawn-out mixes, the longest one clocking in at 5 minutes (by that I mean that two tracks play at the same time and at the same volume for 5 minutes).
  • I felt like it was ages since I had recorded the last Cosmix, even though it’s not even been 6 months.
  • I was afraid the series was dying from lack of interesting material, but these 43 tracks have given me hope for the future.

Still, that being said, I haven’t given away one iota if this mix’ intensity and the music still has the whole stage to speak for itself and make you its slave!

Oh! And if you’re wondering about the lysergic thing, well… Let’s just say there’s plenty of acid sprinkled throughout…

P.S.: Yes. the title of the last track IS a message…

Enjoy!
