Cosmix Redux

Well, I finally decided to upload the entire Cosmix series to Mixcloud today, and I figured I’d create a post here to list all the links in order to facilitate finding them, since Mixcloud only shows uploads in the order they were uploaded. The series started in 2008 and is now 15 mixes deep and would run approximately 36 hours if you played all of them back to back.

Here you go!

Cosmix XII: Event Horizon

OK, so two Cosmixes in less than a week after I even wrote that the series and the genre were dying…?

Well, here’s the story of how those two mixes came to be.

I had been tinkering with a few mix ideas for a few weeks — Loungin, House Music 4 Grown-Ups, Cosmix — but getting nowehere.

Out of frustration, I threw all the tracks in each playlist into a single one and decided to start from there, not knowing what would come out of it.

What came out of it was Cosm11x, but a member of the Cosmix family almost out of necessity as it was on the cusp of being a HM4GU issue were it not, like I wrote, for “too many Disco/Boogie/just-not-House-Music joints in the mix”. I’m still happy with the result, but…

Once that one was done, I proceeded to reclassify every track I hadn’t used back in separate folders — Loungin, House Music 4 Grown-Ups, Cosmix — and, lo and behold, what ended back in the Cosmix folder was super inspiring, so I started planning Cosmix 12, and it merely took a couple of days from planning to recording.

This one is definitely in the Top 3 of my favourite iterations of this soon to be decade-old series of mixes.

No. Seriously. Check it out!

Eleventh iteration of this soon to end Cosmix series, as the genre is dying, in my humble opinion. I struggled in deciding whether this would be part of the House Music 4 Grown-Ups series, but there are too many Disco/Boogie/just-not-House-Music joints in the mix to warrant this one belongin in that series, ergo…

Summer Breeze XV – You Know Summer Is Here When…

…the new edition of my Summer Breeze series is out!

When I started working on this one, I wasn’t sure what it was going to be — a Cosmix, a Loungin’ with Monsieur Seb, a House Music for Grown-Ups or a Summer Breeze

After much tergiversation, the first mix was found and those first two tracks (actually track 2 and 3 on the mix, a third one was tagged in front later in the creation) clearly pointed towards a Summer Breeze iteration and, after recording it, I felt it was kind of a Cosmix Summer, but let’s not overcomplicate things! 🙂

True to its mission, it’s unpretentious, fun music for lounging in the sun, by the pool, drink in hand — except maybe for a slightly darker bit about three quarters into the mix (that cryptic track titled Edit Service #42 based on a Joy Division sample).

But fear not, the mix ends on a very joyous and light note with a song based around my all-time favourite songwriter, musician and arranger, Donald Fagen — the original being I.G.Y., from his 1982 solo album The Nightfly (which, incidentally, is the subtitle of Vol. 5 of my Loungin’ series and features the title track from that album).

Steely Dan/Donald Fagen are not often sampled and Lovebirds does it magnificently well!

On a spur of the moment, I even decided to mix in the original track for an even breezier, yacht rock feel; the perfect end to a great summer mix.

Here, then, for your summer enjoyment, is the fifth edition of Summer Breeze! Feel free to make a donation to cover file hosting!

Monsieur Seb Presents Cosmix 10: Atom & Eve

Image copyright Paul Brisson

Every new Cosmix is an intense labour of love, and this one was even more so.

Why?

Well, since volume 9—almost 2 years have gone by! —, I have been distraught by the fact that the genre represented in this series of mix has kind of withered. . .

The Nu Disco label has become a kind of fad, shall we say for lack of a better term, and in doing so, the forebears of the genre have become more quiet, distracted or otherwise absent, while the hangers-on and wannabes took centre stage. . .

Now, I’m not criticizing, I’m merely explaining why I found this iteration slightly harder to give birth to.

I must admit I almost struggled to find tracks that would fit in a new Cosmix, and even though I am extremely proud of the final result, it is obvious even to the least attentive listener that this mix is a lot more house and tech than it is disco, although the filiation is never far.

Am I forecasting the end of the series?

No.

That would be akin to forecasting the end of music. . .

But the future will be a continuum of the past and I doubt there can be more than one additional iteration in this series, if at all. .

Love,

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix Volume 9: Lysergic Emanations from Outer Space

Let’s be clear right from the get-go:

This is the best Cosmix iteration since the serie’s inception.

Period.

I could very well stop here and let the music do the talking, but I still feel like making introductions for this monster…

Yes, monster.

Nothing short of that.

Why?

Well, for one, because its 43 tracks make for a three hours and fifty-three minutes listening experience.

And also because, even though many hours of preparation were involved, it was recorded in one straight take with no edits or touch-ups, and nothing but a bowl of cafe latte in this DJ…

Needless to say I am extremely proud of the final result of this session, for the following reasons (among others):

  • The track selection is (humbly) flawless. It ranges from your basic Boogie to Jazz-Funk influenced Electronica to downright Deep House and Electro and even a few that are impossible to categorize, all the while keeping to the spirit of the Cosmix series.
  • The mixing is (again, humbly) spot on. As usual, there are many long, drawn-out mixes, the longest one clocking in at 5 minutes (by that I mean that two tracks play at the same time and at the same volume for 5 minutes).
  • I felt like it was ages since I had recorded the last Cosmix, even though it’s not even been 6 months.
  • I was afraid the series was dying from lack of interesting material, but these 43 tracks have given me hope for the future.

Still, that being said, I haven’t given away one iota if this mix’ intensity and the music still has the whole stage to speak for itself and make you its slave!
Oh! And if you’re wondering about the lysergic thing, well… Let’s just say there’s plenty of acid sprinkled throughout…

P.S.: Yes. the title of the last track IS a message…

Enjoy!

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix 8: In Space, Everyone Can See You Boogie

Here it is, Cosmonauts and Cosmonettes: the new Cosmix is about to hit your ears and endorphin production centers!

Several weeks in the making, this iteration of the series is a proud successor to its predecessors inasmuch as it doesn’t much sound like any of them! 🙂

Its 29 tracks range from 115 to 124 beats per minute and from pure disco to so called slo-mo house and deep house with a splash of italo-feeling groove and even an ambiant conclusion that I litterally decided on seconds before the track began. The mix was initially supposed to end with Carl Craig’s remix of Tiga’s track, but for reasons which belong to creators and artists, I just had to throw in Arp’s amazing tribute to krautrock as a coda to this mix.

Despite the high track count, it is a relatively short affair compared to previous iterations in the series. What that means is simple: unmixed, all the tracks on Cosmix 8 total 3,7 hours of music. Mixed (if one excludes the last track that’s not really “mixed” per se), you get 2 hours and 30 minutes. So more that an hour of that tracklist happens while two tracks are playing at the same time… Yeah, I like long haul mixes, a luxury afforded by new technological tools like Mixed in Key and pitch lock.

In any case, enough geek-talk! Enjoy!

You can stream or download it here and your donations are welcome to help me pay for the file hosting!

P.S.: In case you haven’t checked it out yet, don’t forget to give a glance at Cosmix 7.5, which was an exclusive podcast for my friend Mike’s label CCCLTD and kind of a sneak peek at Cosmix 8.

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix 7.5: The Call of CCCLTD

A while ago, my friend Mike, who runs the Quebec City-based label CCCLTD, asked me for an exclusive podcast to be featured on his website. He insisted it be no longer than and hour AND that it be a Cosmic Disco mix.

I was glad and proud to oblige, although I must admit making short a Cosmic Disco mix was quite a feat for me, as I believe this musical style, which I’ve been championning for years, is beter suited to very long mixes, as one can notice by looking at the length of the mixes in my Cosmix series.

With the parameters in mind, I offered Mike to make a kind of off-Cosmix, which is why this is entitled 7.5 (there’s also a 3.5 mix in the series, which is a live set recorded at Picnik Elektronic in 2009).

The deal was that Cosmix 8 would be loosely based on Cosmix 7.5 and that it would come out as soon as the exclusivity to CCCLTD was over.

So, with that said, here it is! and Your donations are welcome to help me pay for the file hosting!

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix vol. 7: Beyond the Rings of Saturn

Yes! Here it is, finally!

I’ve been meaning to get this one out for a little while now, but there have been many trials and false starts, and never was I satisfied with the direction it was going in…

Until today.

As many of my latest mixes, this one came out quite rapidly (about 48 hours: blame that on the fact that I’m jobless at the moment!), albeit not without intense labour.

This mix, which I believe is one of the last of it’s dynasty, is quite a monster, at 2 hours and 47 minutes, comprising 30 tracks that range from 100 bpm to 130 bpm.

“Last of it’s dynasty?”, I hear you say…

Like I mentionned in my post about my recent mix, Summer Breeze, there seems to be a serious convergence between so-called slo-mo house and cosmic disco and, in my mind at least, that means that the Cosmix series will soon become obsolete, giving way to the evolutionnary movement that gave it birth…

Who knows what it’ll be called next, but I’ll definitely be on it’s trail for you… 😉

By the way, here’s the story behind the picture and title of this mix:

“With giant Saturn hanging in the blackness and sheltering Cassini from the sun’s blinding glare, the spacecraft viewed the rings as never before, revealing previously unknown faint rings and even glimpsing its home world.”

The whole story (and full rez downloadable pic) can be found here.

You can stream or download it here and your donations are welcome to help me pay for the file hosting!

Hope you enjoy!

Monsieur Seb’s Cosmix vol. 6: Set the Controls for the Heart of the Ultraworld

Some mixes just beg to be recorded.

Barely two months since the last installment in the series comes a new one.

The pieces just fell into place, or, more appropriately, the sculpture was already in the stone, all I had to do was remove the excess material, to paraphrase what a great sculptor once said.

So, here it is, in all its glorious two hours, fifty-five minutes and 40 seconds, my new 30 tracks-large sound sculpture.

It is all at once very different and totally similar to its predecessors.

It’ll make you groove, move, sway and play, it’ll take you through all kinds of emotions, ideas and dreams.

Or so I humbly hope.

Please abuse responsibly by clicking the title to strem or download the mix.
