Yes yes yes, boys and girls, it is finally here!

I was itching and scratching to get a new Cosmix iteration out since my set at Picnik Electronik (which was basically Cosmix vol. 3.5) and the ensuing Cosmix vol. 4, last August.

It took a while to put it together and find its groove — I do put a lot of thought and research into that series — but what a groove it found for itself!

This, my dear friends, is definitely the grooviest of the Cosmix series, so far!

You are about to download and listen a massive 2 hours and 38 minutes of tasty bits, the danciest, most straightforward of the lot, but then again, maybe not…

All together, the first three tracks alone take up 35 minutes of the total runtime and about a very groovy hour later, there’s a nice psychedelic break so you can light up a fat spliff before you start dancing again and get worked up for that one-two-three, jab-body blow-uppercut finale that’ll leave you dehydrated and, hopefully, ecstatic. I DO strongly reccomend that you listen to this mix in one sitting to fully appreciate it, otherwise the overall groove I was talking about before kinda gets lost…

Personnally, I’ll be bold and daring and say it IS flat out, no competition, my favourite mix in the Cosmix series so far.

Two little tracklist notes:

• The very first track was kindly offered by the artist even though it is still unreleased, and I have promised Dominique to help him get this track signed, so if you have any interest in releasing it or know someone who might, please contact me at dj@monsieurseb.com.

• As you’ve noticed, I take as little credit as possible when recording a mix, after all, I do them to introduce you to artists you might not know. Now, you’ll also notice that one track in the playlist has no links. The ting is, with that one, I have no idea how it got in my iTunes library. I subscribe to dozens of music blogs and such, and when I tried finding a relevant link for this track, I came up basically empty handed. If you have something to suggest, please do!

I call them my secret weapon. As a DJ, that is.

They are rather un- or little-known around these parts, and I’m not sure how well they are known overseas, but I know for sure that without being a household name, they are certainly not complete unknowns.

I’m talking about the Mungolian Jet Set, also known as The 16th Rebels of Mung, among other monikers.

Pål “Strangefruit” Nyhus, Knut Petter Sævik, Reidar Skår and their variable geometry crew, are, to this humble but savvy DJ, among the most creative music producers of recent memory.

No, I’m not exaggerating. And no, I’m not saying this because they are Norwegian and I think Norway (where I’d move anytime given the opportunity) is the best and most beautiful country in the world — as well as being second only to the UK, maybe, in terms of the quality of the music that comes out of it.

I’m saying this because the Mungs consistently produce epic tracks and remixes of Psychedelic Disco, Abstract Ambient, Sound Collage, Trip Hop, even stuff that could be categorized as World Beat! You name it: they’ve done it or will do it one day, without a doubt, and you can be assured that they will constantly raise the bar for themselves in the process.

They’ve remixed a host of great names, among which Ost & Kjex, Lindstrøm, Dominique Leone, Mari Boine, Nils Petter Molvaer, Bebel Gilberto and LSB as well as collaborating with Altz.

For everyone’s listening enjoyment, they’ve recently collected some of their best productions and remixes on a double compilation entitled We Gave It All Away…And Now We Are Taking It Back out now on Smalltown Supersound, even though the release date announced everywhere is Aug. 18th.

This is one of those instances where I cannot urge you enough to get yourself a copy of said compilation, because their releases are not always easy to come by.

Once you’ve accustomed your ears, and mind, to their mind-blowing sound, with all its cultural references — borrowing as much from Ornette Coleman as from Eminem —, seek out their first album, 2006′s Beauty Came to Us in Stone, released on Jazzland Rec.

That album is not for the faint of heart and the intellectually weak, but it is OH! SO rewarding!

It’s around 2005 that I discovered this new sound whose name (or names, as the case may be) I was still unaware of and which blew me away.

Slowly, I started researching, digging virtual crates and it took me a good year before I felt confident enough to try my hand at mixing the tenors of the genre.

As it happened, it was the first mix I recorded with my newly acquired Torq Xponent and the mix that made me decide I was doing away with the restriction imposed by the 75 minutes time limitation of the CD, which itself replaced the good old cassette tape, cutting out yet another 15 minutes from what used to be a good DJ mix.

From that point on, I have not recorded a mix shorter than 1h45 minutes, and all three Cosmix iterations are close to 2 hours and 30 minutes.
